New House- Florida

This Palm Beach House with a free standing garage and guest house was conceived to appear as if it had originally been detached and was later connected with a 1 story non- masonry addition.  It has an English terracotta tile roof, lattice work, Chinese Chippendale railings and the use of louvered shutters- all elements found in British Colonial houses in the Caribbean and other tropical locations.

The entire house is made up of masses that are 1 room deep; allowing for abundant natural light, cross ventilation and enhanced views of the ocean and gardens.  The numerous porches and loggias offer shelter from the heat of the day, but don’t deter the light, air and views from flowing freely through the structure.

The entrance sequence is designed to heighten the arrival experience visually and auditorily- elegant gardens and fountains greet you and lead you to an elliptical arched entry which opens into the stair hall.  This hall passes through a transverse hallway which is narrow and detailed with round arches.  This creates a contrast between the primary access and secondary access end to end.   This hallway leads you to an expansive view of the beach and ocean surrounded by beautiful gardens and outdoor living spaces.

This Pennsylvania stone farmhouse circa 1760's with major additions added in 1890 and 1960 has been fully renovated and refurbished to accommodate the lifestyle of an active, modern day family.  Natural light flows and generous views can be found in every room into every room.

Situated at the end of a private lane, this new house has commanding hilltop views of its 31 acre parcel of land.The land was once part of an original William Penn Land grant, and was owned by a Philadelphian who was hanged for treason during the American Revolution. Located less than eight miles from downtown Philadelphia; the property is an oasis of nature, surrounded on 3 sides by conservancy lands and a stream.The house was designed to respond to the unique characteristics of the site and the long heritage of the Great Estates that have been constructed in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Wissahickon Schist walls, graduated slate roofing, hand-made English tile details along the rakes and window heads along with limestone window surrounds and dramatic chimney forms provide a complex palette of textures and materials that complement the carefully composed massing of the house. The steeply sloping site facilitated the design of an expansive terrace along the rear of the house and dramatic views across the property.      The space under the rear terrace houses an indoor pool with a series of large arched doorways that open into the landscape. Mature trees were preserved around the new building and their overhanging limbs provide shade, scale and a sense of history.
