This renovation and addition is based around the Berks County, PA, Yoder Family homestead. The Yoder family was living in the Oley valley of Berks County prior to 1720 and owned this particular property prior to 1780. The main portion of the house is dated to 1829 as evidenced from the house plate on the front façade, however there is significant evidence of an earlier log structure on the same footprint and the numerous outbuildings appear to pre-date the 1829 portion of the house. The renovations and additions doubled the size of the house, while preserving and restoring the original architectural fabric. The additions comprised of a kitchen, family room, first floor library, several open and enclosed porches and a master suite on the upper level. The free-standing summer kitchen was joined to the existing and new portions of the house thru a glazed porch. Additionally, several inappropriate contemporary modifications to the house were removed and the house was configured to respect its historical legacy. All of the materials used inside and outside the house were indigenous to the Oley valley, and of the 18th century origins. All of the stone was harvested from the excavations required for the new basement spaces. Authentic timber floor systems were incorporated into the design and structure of the house. The renovations and additions to this historical residence were designed to blend and harmonize with the original structures while accommodating the practical needs of a contemporary lifestyle.
