This new house located in Wayne, Pennsylvania is reminiscent of a late 1700s to early 1800s Pennsylvania farmhouse. Sitting on land protected by conservation easements, we designed this house to look as if it had grown over time which is in keeping with the organic growth of the Pennsylvania farmhouse and the appropriate style for the site. The design also fulfilled the lifestyle requirements of a young and growing family.
The functional and aesthetic organization of the house is anchored by a four-bay formal mass with flanking wings. By flanking the primary mass with the wings, it allowed us to enter the primary mass in an Asymmetrical manner yet keep the overall façade balanced. There is an architectural hierarchy that clearly defines the formal and the informal spaces. The expansive views from every room provide a light and airy feeling. Elegant detail and proportion combined with a variety of different materials create a house that is both formal and familiar.
In addition to the main house, we designed a garage/ guesthouse which looks like an older barn structure that had been adapted for reuse. We also designed an understated pool house which creates more of a sense of a garden/agricultural structure
