Carriage House:Additions & Renovation - Haverford, PA

Previously utilized as a carriage house at the turn of the 20th century, this 15,000 s.f. renovation / addition integrates modern conveniences to suit the lifestyle of a young, active family with old world architectural charm in keeping with the original structure built on this site and razed by a fire. The expansive roof, which is laid with russet Turkish tile, can be seen from afar. The roof color compliments the winding antique brick pathways at the front court yard and the stone wall brick cap. The rear of this house, which is fashioned in stone with moments of half-timbering and stucco, has a 2nd Floor Sleeping Porch which overlooks terraces, gardens and the pool. The half-timbered elements of the house are joined together with mortises, tenons, and wooden pegs. This historically accurate construction is also reflected in the new pool house located adjacent to the renovated pool and spa. The pool is set on the lowest level of a new multi-level terrace, which is a wonderful setting for entertaining.

Inside, light and shadow play across the detailed millwork makes use of some of the finest woods including American chestnut, walnut, and cherry. The three existing fireplaces have been completely renovated and provided with new mantels and hearths, while two additional fireplaces were added to the home.

The renovated Entry hall showcases a new painted wood staircase adorned with raised paneling. The floor is a light limestone set in a common bond pattern. Off of the Entry is the renovated Family Room. Upon entering this room, your eye is drawn upwards to the intricately patterned ceiling, which crisscrosses between the wood-paneled beams. The painted recessed panel millwork contrast nicely with the soapstone bolection mantel and stained wood bar opposite. Down a paneled hall, the intricately detailed walnut Library reflects the elliptical arches that march along the exterior of the house. The arches, along with a new fireplace, and classically inspired pilasters create a cozy space.

The basement, which is completely new, is the focal point for parties and gatherings. Upon descending the stair, one enters into the Recreation Room which has an antique brick and oak framed floor. The ceiling is adorned with large reclaimed beams tied together with antique industrial iron bolts and washers. To one side is the Bar; made with a warm, antique, American wormy-chestnut and adorned with Moravian tiles - local to the area. Adjacent to the bar is a stone wall with a fireplace. The fireplace, which is accessible to both the Recreation Room and the Games Room next door, is flanked by two elliptical arches, harkening back to the elliptical stone arches on the exterior of the house. Through the arches are the Game Room and Gym. The Gym is separated from the space via two large sliding barn doors, which allow for privacy.

The lot has been beautifully landscaped by Chuck Hess, L.A. A large flat playing field has replaced the old tennis court that used to be on site. Grass and stone steps lead from the playing field up to the lowest terrace, Pool, and Pool House. The terraces are largely free from any fences, opening up the view from both outside and inside the residence.
