Overlooking a sheltered, alpine pond, this house is an old world interpretation of a hunting lodge. Choosing the house site was the primary challenge as the property is a forested wilderness with waterfalls, rock fields, deep ravines and open wetlands. The site chosen allowed the residence to have views into the forest, along the banks of a pond and a canopy of trees on the far shore opening up into the western sky.
Built of local, natural stone, the house has deep eaves with wood rafter tails and half timbering. Subtle detailing and splashes of brick and tooling at the timbers create a feeling of grandness while maintaining the balance of proportion, scale and use of light. The interiors reflect the clients’ love of wood using various veneers and different species of timber which were selected for their color and texture.
